The ABC's Of Kindergarten  

Standard 7d. Establishes and implements professional development plans based upon the teacher needs aligned to the Iowa Teaching Standards and district/building student achievement goals.

Justification: As part of Iowa's Professional Development cycle, this mid-year reflection and update details my own progress during the school year 2007-2008 to develop the use of literacy centers in my third grade classroom.  Literacy centers was the focus of our professional development during that school year.

What progress have you made toward completion of the plan?

I have implemented a literacy center time in my daily schedule. I am choosing centers based on needs shown by students during our guided reading time, daily work and assessment results.

What are you learning?

It is almost impossible to give everyone exactly (and only) what they need. I am finding out that I am ending up with ever changing groups of students for a particular activity, and that some students are needing a lot of extra practice in things while others don’t.

What impact is this learning having on you and your students?

Changes in my schedule, changes in their expectations for independent work. This set up requires them to be more able to self monitor their learning.

Are you requesting any additional resources?

I would love to see other teachers literacy center time, even or especially outside of the district in order to better learn about it!
